Modern Foreign Languages
MFL Curriculum Intent
At White Mere Primary school, we believe that learning a foreign language provides valuable educational, social and cultural experiences for our pupils. Pupils develop communication and Literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. Learning another language introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. Furthermore, it promotes British Values within school by encouraging understanding of diversity of other cultures and teaching tolerance and respect of these differences in the wider world.
‘A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes ’ (National Curriculum 2013).
