History

Intent

At White Mere Primary School it is our intention that all of our children will become responsible citizens of the future.  We know that an essential part of this intention is the effective study and reflective learning of History.

Through following the Dimensions “Learning means the World” curriculum, our pupils will develop their own cultural capital and take part in discussions around what it is to be a good UK and global citizen.  History introduces pupils to diversity within different societies and the relationships between different groups overtime, challenging them to view events from different time periods and perspectives.  Leading eventually to greater empathy and understanding of events and situations.

Implementation

History objectives are taught through thematic units, combining subject knowledge, historical skills, enquiry and fieldwork.  Learning takes place both inside and outside of the classroom.

Our six pillars of progress through which all children will develop are:

  • Chronology
  • Continuity and Change
  • Cause and Consequence
  • Historical Vocabulary
  • Perspective and Interpretations
  • Similarities and Differences

Pathfinders – Fit people and events into a chronological framework.  Learning will focus on people that have lived and events which have occurred mainly withing the last 200 years.  The historical content often links to children’s everyday experiences, making learning more concrete and less abstract.

Adventurers – children begin to learn about more specific time periods of history, and to develop the narrative within these periods.

Navigators – make connections between periods of history.  As children’s knowledge builds and children begin to make connections between events and time periods.

Early Years

In EYFS, History is taught through Understanding of the World.

  • Children begin to make sense of their own life-story and family’s history.
  • Through stories, they learn to compare and contract characters, including figures from the past.
  • Know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
  • Learn about settings, characters and events through storytelling and books read in class.

Our intent is always to ensure our pupils are ready for their next phase of education. Our skills progressions outline the end-of-year expectations.
