Geography

Intent

At White Mere Primary School it is our intention that all of our children will become responsible citizens of the future. We know that an essential part of this intention is the effective study of Geography.

Through following the Dimensions “Learning means the World” curriculum, children build upon their natural curiosity about the world, develop a better understanding of different societies and cultures and an appreciation of the incredible diversity of landscapes and people. In geography, we learn the meaning of sustainability and the importance of caring for the planet and all of its inhabitants.

Implementation

Geography objectives are taught through thematic units, combining subject knowledge, geographical skills, enquiry and fieldwork. Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom.

Our six pillars of progress through which all children will develop are:

  • Processes and Changes
  • Human Geography
  • Physical Geography
  • Geographical Vocabulary
  • Locations and Environments
  • Similarities and Differences

Early Years

In EYFS, Geography is taught through Maths and Understanding of the World.

  • Children learn positional language and describe familiar routes.
  • Draw simple maps.
  • Use all their senses in hands-on exploration of natural materials.
  • Begin to understand the need to respect and care for the natural environment and all living things.
  • Know that there are different countries in the world and talk about the differences they have experienced or seen in photos.
  • Recognise some similarities and differences between life in

this country and life in other countries.

  • Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on experiences and what has been read in class.
  • Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons.

Our intent is always to ensure our pupils are ready for their next phase of education. Our skills progressions outline the end-of-year expectations.
